What value are United Nations resolutions when, as we wait for the start of the Paris2024 games, wars rage in both Ukraine and Palestine? Is it simply time for the United Nations to be replaced by an institution that has influence over its members?
Background of the United Nations
When the League of Nations was replaced by the United Nations after WWII ended, it was hoped that peace would prevail for decades if not centuries. Sadly, that has not been the case as too many vested interests are housed within the Permanent Security Council. It would seem a simple case of human nature prevailing over the common good.
The Security Council consists of fifteen members, of which five are permanent: China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These were the great powers that were the victors of World War II (or their recognized successor states).
The UN's Membership has grown from the original 51 Member States in 1945 to the current 193 Member States. All UN Member States are members of the General Assembly. States are admitted to membership by a decision of the General Assembly upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
Perhaps a world that hosts the 2028 games will be different?
